Making money through YouTube is fairly easy to do, if you know what you are doing. This site is ranked number 4 in traffic rank in the USA and ranked number 3 on Alexa.com , making it one of the biggest and most successful sites on the Internet.

YouTube gets over one billion views each and every day. That's a number roughly equal to one sixth of the people on this planet. That's impressive by any standards. All you need to make money through YouTube is a few hundred every day. Here's how to tap into a tiny, but profitable, drop of the daily YouTube traffic.

1. If you know how to do something, and it doesn't have to be something complicated, make a short video explaining the steps someone else needs to take to do it. For example, make a video explaining how to FTP files to a web space.

You can make a PowerPoint presentation, record it with screen capture software and add a commentary. It can be that simple. At the end of the video promote something like web hosting, or an FTP program, as an affiliate. Then all you need to do is upload your video to YouTube.

2. You can make effective videos with Windows Movie Maker, built in to the popular Windows operating system. It isn't a very sophisticated piece of software, but it can do a good job if you are careful. Use images to tell a simple story. You could make it funny perhaps, and at the end of the video you can promote a product as an affiliate.

If your video can entertain the viewer, and if the product you promote has a kind of universal appeal - that is, the average person is likely to want it, then you should make sales from the people who decide to go to the website. Simply display the web address at the end of the short video, and don't forget to tell the viewers to go there and buy it.

3. Don't just rely on YouTube visitors to find and look at your video. Get proactive! Use well researched keywords when you upload your videos. Use keywords that have a good search number, but relatively low competition count. This will help the page your video is on to rank in Google.

Go further still. Submit the RSS feed of your video page to all the RSS aggregators. Build back links to the page to help it rank better. Bookmark the page on social bookmarking sites. Submit it as a story toDigg , Propeller , Mixx and others.

Submit the RSS feeds of your submitted stories to the aggregators. Get more back links. If you can get the page your YouTube video is on to rank high in Google, Yahoo and Bing, you will get a lot more visitors. If you get more visitors, you will make more sales.

How Thesis Helped Boost My AdSense Earnings

You may remember me mentioning how well the 728×90 AdSense unit has been performing on this blog. Since then, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about how I added it.

So I thought I’d create a video showing how to use the Thesis Feature Box function that is built right into the theme. (The code is located below the video.)

Even if you don’t use the Thesis WordPress theme, you can still apply some of the logic to your own blog (especially the CSS code).

You would still use the same CSS info on your stylesheet.css file. However, instead of using the code I provided for the custom_functions.php file below, you will add <div id=”feature_box”> INSERT BANNER CODE HERE </div> to the appropriate location of your header.php file, for example.

Note to Email/RSS subscribers: To obtain the code, it’s best to view this post on my blog.

Here’s the CSS Code to Add to custom.css (Your Stylesheet)

This will add a 100 pixel gray box below your header. Feel free to adjust the color, height, add a background image, etc.

Protecting Your google AdSense Account

It’s a fear many Webmasters have — getting pulled from AdSense for fraudulent clicks or other activity deemed “against AdSense TOCs”.

The fear is pretty valid. I’ve heard of people getting pulled from the program for “no apparent reason” (according to them).

Of course there are two sides to every story, but it reinforces that Google’s #1 interest is protecting their advertisers, not you, the publisher.

And rightfully so.

Google watches AdSense accounts like a hawk, especially if you’re a new member.

They track IP addresses and monitor for fraudulent clicks on a regular basis. A friend of mine clicked her own ads and was removed from the program within 2 days of joining.

While I have no fool-proof way to ensure your account won’t get dinged, here are some tips to keep you in good graces with Google.

1. Report Accidental Clicks

If you accidentally click on your own ads (and people have done this), the best thing to do is report it to Google immediately. In fact, Google even advises you to do this.

If you’re honest and upfront about it, Google probably won’t remove you from the program. Your account may get flagged temporarily and/or you may lose some revenue, but it’s better you report it than having them find out about it.

Just make sure this doesn’t become a habit.

2. Stop Telling Your Friends & Family to Click on Your Ads

Some people join Adsense with the intent of getting rich by having their friends and family click on their ads. While you may think this is pretty fool-proof idea, it’s not very smart or ethical.

First of all, advertisers pay for those ads through the AdWords program. So when you tell people to randomly click the ads, you are throwing their hard-earned money down the toilet. In a way, it’s stealing.

Second, what if Google notices the multiple clicks from the same IP address. Yes, maybe it’s not your IP address, but is it really worth the risk? Plus, I would imagine Google would eventually ignore those clicks anyway.

3. When Google Calls…. Answer… And Keep Your Records

Some thieves are not too bright. Once I caught someone who literally ripped off my entire site. Not only did they forget to remove my AdSense code, but they violated the AdSense T&C’s by calling attention to the ads.

Google discovered this site, and because the person was using my AdSense code, they contacted me because they thought it was my site. I explained to them what happened.

After I replied, I didn’t hear back from Google and that made me a little nervous. So I contacted them again and included the previous correspondence.

This time I received an answer and Google told me they added a note to my file that said I was not the owner of the domain that violated the T&C’s. More importantly, I saved this reply for my own records just in case.

4. Obey The Rules

Even though Google doesn’t seem to be enforcing this much, they recently added a section to their T&C’s that require any site that uses AdSense to have a Privacy Policy. See the end of Section 1 of their terms and conditions.

Many Webmasters aren’t taking this too seriously, but if it’s in their T&C’s then why not take 10 minutes to set it up?

A lot of people feel Google owes them something or they are doing Google a big favor by being an AdSense publisher.

I have no way of knowing how AdSense affects Google’s bottom line, but I can tell you this. Thousands of advertisers are paying to advertise with Google through AdWords, and we know that’s where Google is making its money.

AdWords advertisers funnel thousands of dollars into Google everyday and indirectly earning you money from AdSense. Google’s best interest is keeping them happy, not the publishers. Remember, AdSense publishers aren’t paying Google a cent.

7 AdSense Strategies You Should Adopt

1. Make room for the 728×90 banner — if you can

Obviously you don’t want to crowd your site or make it look awkward, but if your experience with this unit size is anything like mine, you may want to consider opening up a spot.

I am now using this banner size on three of my sites: WebsiteBabble.com, Flat-Stomach-Exercises.com and finally this blog.

In all three cases it performs great and the eCPM (earnings per thousand) is higher than the other sizes. This is the only AdSense unit that has ever performed well on this blog.

Due to the Google terms I am not allowed to disclose my eCPM, but it is significantly higher than my other units. Understand that a high eCPM doesn’t necessarily mean I’m getting a lot of clicks, but I’m earning more per click compared to other units.

2. Set your channels to “Targetable”

Doing this allows premium advertisers to advertise solely on your site if they wish. They can outbid all other contextual advertisers and lock down a spot on your site for an indefinite amount of time. Premium advertisers pay more for this kind of ad, so it means you can earn more per click.

3. Display ads alongside videos

I do this quite often on 2CreateAWebSite.com, and those units usually perform better than any other (even the leaderboard ads). And if you’re wondering if this is against the terms, wonder no more.

I actually got this idea from Google. Their optimization team ran an analysis on my site years ago and suggested I add the ads alongside my videos.

From a technical standpoint, there are a few ways to accomplish this. It’s probably best to use CSS, but you can also use a simple table. Yes, tables are so 1990-ish, but they still work and come in handy for accomplishing this.

So the idea is to create a table with two equal columns. Put the video in the left column and the ad code in the right (or vice versa.) Here’s the code for a simple table you can use. Adjust the widths of your table, video and AdSense ads accordingly….

4. Create Channels

It’s amazing how many people do not setup new channels when they create new AdSense code. How will you ever know which unit performs the best if they are all lumped together?

5. Refresh!

Every now and then I’ll do a refresh and change the look of my units… slightly.

I usually keep the background color the same because I like for it to match my site, but I may change the color of the title or URL text. I seem to notice a slight boost when I do this. Of course there is never any proof this is the reason, but what can it hurt to try?

6. Pay attention to your Analytics reports

If you use Google Analytics, you can sync your AdSense and Analytics accounts together so you can see how much each page is earning.

Keep track of and analyze your highest earning pages. Are they your highest because of traffic or is there some other reason? (Different ad placement or size.)

7. Delete under-peforming units

I have not been able to confirm exactly what AdWords advertisers can see with regards to the Publisher’s stats (click through rates, etc.) But since they can opt to advertise on our sites exclusively, I try to keep my overall CTR as high as possible by getting rid of units that perform below my own average.

Obviously “under-performing units” will be defined by your individual average and it will be different for everyone.

I get quite a few requests on YouTube to review various MLM (multi level marketing) programs so I want to clarify something.

I am an affiliate which is a little different. MLM has never been my cup of tea so I don’t spend much time looking into these programs.

That is not to say you cannot make a lot of money from MLM, it’s just not my preference for monetization.

Now, I have to choose my words carefully in this post because…

1) I’m not an expert on MLM (nor do I want to be)

2) I realize there are a lot of varieties of MLM and you can’t paint all the programs with the same brush

3) Many people make a good, honest living with MLM

The Difference Between MLM and Affiliate Marketing

So you may be wondering, what is the difference between affiliate programs and MLM? Well, in short, affiliate marketing is usually a one to one relationship (except the 2 tier programs) where MLM is usually a one to many relationship.

For example, as an affiliate, I refer a product from my site and the merchant (company) pays me a commission for the sale. That’s the one to one relationship.

With MLM, it can involve several levels and you can make money from the sales of the people you recruit to the program and the people they refer too. This can go on for several levels deep.

People at the top of the chain who have several high-performing team members (downline) can make great deal of money over time.

MLM has gotten a bad rap over the years because of all the get-rich-quick and pyramid schemes (that should not be called MLM). You definitely need to do your research before joining such programs.

How to Make Money With an Internet Business

The ways to make money on the Internet are numerous, and savvy entrepreneurs can reap considerable profits from deploying a solid web-based business model. Not every business lends itself well to the Web, but a few industries have proven to be quite successful online. Common ways to make money with an Internet business include collecting advertising revenue, selling products or services and building an online marketplace.

Step 1

Collect advertising revenue on your website. Advertising can turn any popular website into a cash machine. Certain types of websites lend themselves to online advertising more than others. Content driven websites, such as news sites and discussion forums, can leverage Internet advertising more than professional consultants, for example. Solicit individual companies to sell advertising space, or take advantage of an online ad placement service, such as Google's AdWords.

Step 2

Sell products on your website. This technique is fairly straightforward, but it can be challenging to accomplish. Online retailers face a set of issues and challenges that their brick-and-mortar counterparts do not have to deal with. Reliable distribution is a crucial issue for online retailers; your delivery times and reliability can make or break your company through word-of-mouth advertising. Pay careful attention to order tracking and making sure they are packaged and shipped correctly is another concern that online retailers face.

Step 3

Offer Internet-based services to customers. A range of services can be offered online, and a number of service delivery options can be employed. Consultant businesses, for example, may use their websites simply as marketing tools to establish contacts with potential customers. Others, such as website designers, may take orders and deliver services completely online.

Step 4

Earn income with a subscription business model. Subscription revenue can provide a reliable income stream for content-driven websites, such as newspapers and magazines, which, as mentioned, can also take advantage of advertising revenue.

Step 5

Earn income with a skimming business model. Building an online marketplace and bringing together buyers and sellers can be a profitable online business model. Websites, such as Half.com and eBay.com, for example, do not directly sell any products or services. Instead, they provide buyers and sellers with an opportunity to connect and do business, and they skim a percentage of each sale off the top. This can be an extremely profitable business model, but you must build a truly unique marketplace that fulfills an unmet need.
