Google Gets Strict and Frustrates Bloggers
If you are already an AdSense member, you may not know that Google recently tightened up their acceptance policies for their popular AdSense program.
Gone are the days where you can throw up a quick Blogger blog today and get accepted into the AdSense program by tomorrow.
According to their policies, you must adhere to the following guidelines…
1) Your website must sit on a top-level domain (yoursite.com not yoursite.host.com).
2) Your domain must be active for at least 6 months
3) Your AdSense application info must match your domain records
Due to the fact I am already a member, I was not aware of some of these policies until I began getting more emails from people who were getting rejected because their site didn’t adhere to one or more of the guidelines.
One blogger was quite upset, saying he believed his Blogger blog had very well written content that was unique. Another lady complained that the guidelines were just too strict and should be relaxed.
Take note that both of these blogs were created with the free Blogger service and neither had their own domain name to redirect to their blogs.
Here’s My Take…
If you want to make money online, understand that you are setting up a business. Businesses require investments and work. If you are not prepared to fork over $3-$10/month for hosting then maybe this is not for you right now.
I personally don’t think the criteria is overly strict, and it will eliminate many of the low-quality sites throughout the network. If you ask me, this is long overdue.
What people need to understand is that Google must protect their advertisers — the lifeblood of their business. And because Google started out with such a relaxed acceptance policy, things got out of hand.
Worthless blogs and websites with plagiarized content were going up left and right. Numerous people tried to cheat the system by inviting friends to click their ads or using other computers to click their own ads.
Instead of treating AdSense as a monetization model for their business, people behaved as if this was some way to get-rich quickly with Google ads.
What Publishers Should Know
If you’re an AdSense publisher, understand that being a member is a privilege, not a right. Some webmasters seem to feel they are entitled to get paid by Google because they have a website, but as I stated earlier, Google’s top priority is the AdWords advertisers.
We the publishers are helping Google advertise and Google is paying us a percentage of what they earn. If the advertisers complain about the quality of the sites or click fraud, then it’s in Google’s best interest to rectify the situation.
Now of course, the AdWords advertisers can choose NOT to display their ads on the publisher websites, but that’s not the point. Publishers need to respect and understand how the AdWords and AdSense relationship works.
I applaud Google for their policies. If you think about it, everyone wins in the end. If the overall quality of the publisher sites improve, more AdWords advertisers may opt in to display their ads on our sites, thus giving us publishers the opportunity to earn more.
In the last two months my AdSense earnings are up quite a bit. Some analysts speculate Google’s cleanup and stricter policies are causing more AdWords advertisers to opt into advertising on the publisher sites.
There’s no way I can know this for sure, but I wouldn’t doubt this has an impact.

So it appears that Google may take the quality of your content into consideration. Nevertheless, it can’t hurt to wait. In that thread I explained that I earn roughly 30% per sale as a reseller with my store Website Palace.
That doesn’t sound like a lot of money if you consider web hosting and domains are pretty cheap, right? So a $10 hosting package is only going to earn about $3.
Someone asked why resell when I could earn much healthier commissions as a hosting affiliate.
While it is true, hosting affiliate programs can be very generous (I’ve seen commissions as high as $150 per sale.) However, the benefits to reselling outweigh regular hosting affiliate programs by far, and here’s why…
1) Many hosting affiliate programs pay a flat rate commission. No matter how much a person orders, your commission remains the same.
And once the cookie expires, you won’t earn anything else if that person comes back to buy additional products.
When you resell, that customer becomes yours for life because they are purchasing from your branded reseller store.
As they continue to renew their domains/hosting and buy additional products from your store, you continually earn with every purchase for every product.
As your customer base grows (mine has been growing since 2002), your earnings will continually snowball — even though you are only earning a small percentage per sale.
2) Many reseller programs allow you to customize portions of your store (header, receipt, etc.) This allows me to offer incentives (freebies) that help drive more business to my store.
3) More control. Set your own prices so you have full control of your profit margin.
Reselling has been the lifeblood of my business since 2002, and it’s all because of the residual/passive income. It was the main reason I was comfortable quitting my 9 to 5 back in 2006.
A lot of you probably assume my business is based on AdSense or SiteSell (Site Build It!). Not even close. The residuals from reselling domains and hosting make up a substantial part of my earnings.
Why GoDaddy?
I chose Wild West Domains (GoDaddy) because they were one of the only reputable reseller programs back in 2002, but there are many others to choose from today. Hostgator also has a very popular reseller program, so you should check them out too.
I’ve been pretty happy with GoDaddy. They handle all my customer support and the perks for top resellers are nice too. In January, I was invited to an all-expense-paid trip to the FireSky Resort in Arizona for a reseller conference.
Quick Note: As I’ve said in other posts about reselling, I don’t want you running over to sign up as a reseller just because you’ve been wowed by this blog post. The main reason I have been able to do well is I have an audience that fits the hosting reseller business.If your site is about fashion, it’s obviously not going to convert the way mine does. However, if your site targets Webmasters/Bloggers/Internet Marketers, this is something you may want to consider.
Downsides to Reselling
Just like any program, there are upsides and downsides…
1) As a reseller, you cannot charge anything lower than the parent company. So of course, you may lose business to more popular, well known companies because your prices are higher.
This has never been much of an issue for me because I offer incentives (free templates, a getting started guide, etc.) and I try to provide value to make up for the markup. It’s important that my customers get value for their money.
2) You won’t have the brand awareness of many of the larger companies so people may be skeptical of purchasing from you. This is where building up your own credibility and integrity through teaching and informing comes into play. When people trust and like you, they don’t mind supporting your business.
3) You have more control, but not total control. Even though reselling provides you more control than being an affiliate, you never have total control if you don’t completely own the company/business.
In Conclusion…
In spite of the downsides, I have no regrets about becoming a reseller. In my opinion, the positives outweigh the negatives.
So while those $100 hosting affiliate commissions may sound tempting, if you are looking for long-term/passive/residual income, you might want to consider reselling.
I’m all about portfolio diversification and building multiple streams of income. 2005 Traffic & Adsense Revenue Growth
Last night I presented a 90–minute workshop to a group of about 60 speakers (some Toastmasters and some members of the National Speakers Association) about how to take advantage of internet and blogging technology. I had a great time showing people what they could achieve by putting their content online, and I received a lot of positive feedback afterwards.
As part of my PowerPoint presentation, I included a couple graphs. The first one showed how my web traffic has increased over the past 12 months. In February 2005 this site received about 86,000 visitors, and this month I’m projecting about 715,000. That projection should be fairly accurate, since we’re already halfway through the month, and my traffic tends to be largely predictable over the course of each month now. Even when I get a traffic spike on a certain day, it’s generally not a big percentage of overall monthly traffic.
Here’s the graph showing my traffic growth for the past 12 months from Feb 2005 to Jan 2006. The numbers on the left represent number of visitors.
The only month where traffic actually went down was July 2005, but that was mainly because June saw such a big spike. Other than that though, traffic has increased every month since the site launched in October 2004.
Traffic has been growing at an average rate of about 21% per month. If that rate continues for another 12 months, it will mean a 10x increase in traffic a year from now. I’ve no idea what kind of increase 2006 will actually bring though. Time will tell.
Here’s a graph showing my Adsense revenue growth from Feb 2005 to Jan 2006. The January figure is again a projection, but it should be fairly accurate. In Feb 2005 I made $53 from Adsense — it was the first month I started using Adsense. This month I’m projecting about $4700 from Adsense.
Adsense revenue has gone up every single month, increasing at an average rate of about 50% per month. This has held stable the past couple months as well, so it isn’t tapering off yet.
That’s pretty amazing growth. Imagine getting a 50% raise every month. As you can imagine, I’m excited to see what happens in 2006. The current level of income is OK, but the momentum is incredible. This is one thing I love about being an entrepreneur. Some people think a stable paycheck is nice, but for me it would mean giving up way too much. I’d rather work a whole month for only $53 and be building this kind of momentum than get a flat salary month after month. Security is worthless if you have to sacrifice growth to get it.
I’ve no idea how long this rate of increase will continue. But even a 10% ongoing monthly increase will triple the monthly revenue over the next 12 months, and a 20% increase will multiply it by 9. Check back with me in a year to see how I’m doing.
The chart above is for Adsense revenue only, not total site revenue. I also earn income from Chitika eMiniMalls, affiliate programs, and even donations. I didn’t chart those other sources though because they’re too recent, so I don’t have any long-term data. But they’re already showing promise, and it looks like they’ll be fairly stable too. If I were to include those other income sources, then the income growth rate is even better than 50% per month. But I think it’s interesting just to look at the Adsense data. I expect to have an easy time making six figures from this site this year.
It’s interesting that the traffic growth has been 21% per month while the revenue growth has been 50%. Adsense revenue is obviously a function of traffic, so why the difference? Mostly I credit the difference to optimization work I’ve been doing each month, so the ads get a much higher CTR and CPM than when I first started (CPM has more than doubled). And Google is continuing to optimize Adsense as well, so I gain the benefits of their improvements. I think more ad dollars are flowing online too. Advertisers absolutely love blogs. And I’m OK with the ads because most of them are directly related to personal development. If the ads were worthless, people wouldn’t be clicking on them.
What created this traffic growth? Word of mouth. Nothing I’ve done directly has had as much impact as basic word of mouth. I do virtually no marketing — my visitors do it for me. Blogging technology certainly facilitates this effect (via feeds, pings, and trackbacks), but ultimately the growth comes from people telling other people about this site. And for that I’m very grateful. A referral is the best form of feedback.
This is a fascinating business model. I obviously didn’t invent it, but I’m certainly enjoying the ride. It’s so incredibly simple, much simpler than running my games business was. The risk is virtually nil, and there’s basically no overhead aside from web hosting (assuming you already own a computer and have internet access). There’s no selling, no products, no customers, no order processing, no fraud, no inventory, no shipping, and no deadlines. And yet you earn income 24/7.
But what I like best about this model is that it allows me to share my best content for free, which means it will reach more people. Not everyone is going to buy a book or CD or attend a seminar on personal development. But anyone can benefit from a free article, and this site now has over 300 to choose from, plus 15 feature articles and 9 audio files. All free.

Edit 5:08pm: Someone asked me about bandwidth usage. In Feb 2005 this site used about 2GB of bandwidth. In Dec 2005 it used almost 200GB, so that’s a 100x increase. The audio content does require significant bandwidth, but my current hosting arrangement still gives me some room to grow. I can always offload the audio files to a separate server if needed

I didn’t chart those other sources though because they’re too recent, so I don’t have any long-term data. But they’re already showing promise, and it looks like they’ll be fairly stable too. If I were to include those other income sources, then the income growth rate is even better than 50% per month. But I think it’s interesting just to look at the Adsense data. I expect to have an easy time making six figures from this site this year.
It’s interesting that the traffic growth has been 21% per month while the revenue growth has been 50%. Adsense revenue is obviously a function of traffic, so why the difference? Mostly I credit the difference to optimization work I’ve been doing each month, so the ads get a much higher CTR and CPM than when I first started (CPM has more than doubled). And Google is continuing to optimize Adsense as well, so I gain the benefits of their improvements. I think more ad dollars are flowing online too. Advertisers absolutely love blogs. And I’m OK with the ads because most of them are directly related to personal development. If the ads were worthless, people wouldn’t be clicking on them.
What created this traffic growth? Word of mouth. Nothing I’ve done directly has had as much impact as basic word of mouth. I do virtually no marketing — my visitors do it for me. Blogging technology certainly facilitates this effect (via feeds, pings, and trackbacks), but ultimately the growth comes from people telling other people about this site. And for that I’m very grateful. A referral is the best form of feedback.
This is a fascinating business model. I obviously didn’t invent it, but I’m certainly enjoying the ride. It’s so incredibly simple, much simpler than running my games business was. The risk is virtually nil, and there’s basically no overhead aside from web hosting (assuming you already own a computer and have internet access). There’s no selling, no products, no customers, no order processing, no fraud, no inventory, no shipping, and no deadlines. And yet you earn income 24/7.
But what I like best about this model is that it allows me to share my best content for free, which means it will reach more people. Not everyone is going to buy a book or CD or attend a seminar on personal development. But anyone can benefit from a free article, and this site now has over 300 to choose from, plus 15 feature articles and 9 audio files. All free.

Edit 5:08pm: Someone asked me about bandwidth usage. In Feb 2005 this site used about 2GB of bandwidth. In Dec 2005 it used almost 200GB, so that’s a 100x increase. The audio content does require significant bandwidth, but my current hosting arrangement still gives me some room to grow. I can always offload the audio files to a separate server if needed

Profiting as a YouTube Partner
There are many benefits to posting videos on YouTube. For one, it can help improve your online exposure by giving your potential audience another way to find you online.
Also, because YouTube is owned by Google, they will often display the videos in their natural search results on Google.com. So, not only can people find your videos on YouTube.com, they may also find them in Google as well.
Finally, the benefit I want to talk about here is their Partner Program. As a YouTube partner, you can display ads within or alongside your videos and you get paid for every ad click.
The program works very much like Google AdSense. In fact, your earnings and reports are all tied into your AdSense account. If you do not have an account upon applying for the Partner Program then you'll be prompted to create one.
Some people have suggested that you need at least 600 subscribers and over 100,000 video views before you will be accepted into the program. Although, I've heard of people getting accepted with less than 100 subscribers. I think a lot depends on the type of channel you have and the quality of your videos.
For example, channels about how to make money tend to have a lot of sketchy, spammy content so YouTube may be more strict with channels that have this kind of content.
The more related the ads are to your videos, the greater chance people will click on them. Just know that you cannot control what ads show up. That's all up to YouTube. It's important you title and tag your videos accordingly so YouTube can serve up ads that are as relevant as possible.
It's reasonable to believe that certain channels may make more than others due to the nature of the ads. For example, financial ads may pay more than gaming ads. I have no proof of this, of course. I'm only speculating.
It should only take a few days to hear back from YouTube after you apply, and if your application is declined, you cannot re-apply for a certain period of time.
