The word blogging comes from the contraction of the two words, "web log," which describes a kind of online diary maintained by someone. Blogging has become extremely popular since its early beginnings in late 1997.

It was Jorn Barger who first used the term, "weblog" to describe what he was doing. In April or May of 1998 Peter Merholz made a joke by splitting weblog into "we blog" as a description of the practice of maintaining a weblog. Blogging became a descriptive term soon after.

A blog differs from a static website in several ways. It is extremely easy to use for one thing as posts can be made through an online text editor. The structure of a blog is also taken care of in most cases, making blogs well optimized for the search engines.

While many people use blogs to keep a record of what they are doing, or of a project they are engaged in, blogging has become a very useful tool for the effective promotion of a main website.

Merchants, who have a main site selling a product, or many products, may have difficulty in getting their main site to rank highly in the search engines. If it doesn't rank high there will be few visitors, and therefore very few sales.

A simple and very effective answer is to set up a blog. Companies employ people to make posts on a daily basis about their company, or about their products. Each post will have a link that points back to their main site. The benefits of doing this are two-fold.

First of all they get a valuable back link to their main site. This will help their main site to rank better in the search engine results. The blog is likely to rank better than the main site and faster too. This means it will get increasing traffic. Some of the visitors to the blog will follow the links back to the main site where a percentage of them will purchase products.

Of course, a company is not limited to a single blog. They can have dozens of them, all with someone dedicated to blogging every day making highly relevant keyword rich posts that all contain a link back to the main site.

This very quickly gets valuable back links to the main site, as well as providing rich content that will in most cases rank well. The resultant traffic and sales is likely to be far greater than a single main site could ever achieve.

Bloggers who maintain a single site and are dedicated to blogging on a particular topic can also de very well. It will take time to build up a faithful following, but it is being done every day by thousands of successful bloggers who are in most cases making a very good living from doing it.

Most bloggers do not make their incomes directly from the sale of products. If they have a highly trafficked blog, they can sell advertising space to other merchants, or they can monetize the blog by placing AdSense ads, or some other form of revenue sharing advertising model.
Blogging, done properly, has proven very effective and very profitable too. One of the most popular free blogging platforms is at Blogger owned by Google. Affiliate Programs make Money Online

Affiliate programs, or affiliate marketing programs, are systems that are set up so that a merchant can offer a commission, usually a percentage of the profits, to anyone who wishes to promote and sell the products that the merchant stocks.

There are distinct advantages for both parties. The merchant does not have to pay or work to get the customers that the affiliate brings in, and the affiliate does not have to stock items, or be concerned about payment processing and order fulfillment.

Affiliate programs are often run by affiliate networks. These are large online companies that manage affiliate programs for merchants or retailers. Typically they will manage many hundreds or even thousands of affiliate programs for many merchants. The affiliate marketer, also sometimes known as the publisher, can sign up with an affiliate network and find affiliate programs that they wish to promote.

This means that there are typically four main stakeholders involved in affiliate marketing: the merchant, the affiliate network, the affiliate marketer and the customer. This set up simplifies the procedure for all parties involved. Both the merchant and the affiliate marketer leave the management of the affiliate program to the affiliate network, and the customer is unaffected at every level.

One of the biggest sources of affiliate programs can be found at Commission Junction . This is one of the best established affiliate networks. Other popular affiliate networks include, but are not limited to:ClickBank , LinkShare , Shareasale , Affiliate Window , Amazon , and LinkConnector .

Most affiliate programs involve promoting a product and earning a commission whenever a sale is made. However, there are other types of affiliate programs. Google has one of the best known pay-per-click programs. Its AdSense program is well known and widely used. The main reason for its popularity lies in the fact that the affiliate marketer gets paid whenever someone clicks on an ad; they don't have to actually buy anything.

Another popular type of affiliate program is the cost-per-lead (CPL) model. With this model the affiliate gets paid when the potential customer takes a certain action. This is usually signing up to receive further information. At this point the merchant takes over and tries to persuade the person to actually become a paying customer.

The CPL affiliate program is very popular as, like AdSense, it does not require the visitor to actually buy anything in order to get paid. Also, CPL affiliate programs usually pay well. They are used by companies, such as those selling mortgages, who stand to gain a considerable lot if someone becomes a customer. For this reason the CPL model can be very lucrative.
Affiliate programs are commonplace all over the Internet today. Merchants who do not run an affiliate program are considered unusual in most cases. Selling Flat-Rate Ads on Your Site

Due to the number of questions I receive about flat-rate ads, I thought I’d blog about this topic today.

First of all, flat-rate ads have a fixed price regardless of impressions, clicks, etc.  So charging someone $50 per month for an ad on your site would be an example of a flat-rate ad.

In this post I want to discuss three different ways you can host these kinds of ads.

1)  AdBrite

As you may know, AdBrite will host and manage your flat-rate ads for you.  Of course, the catch is they take a percentage of the revenue you earn from each ad.

However, the positive side is they manage the addition and removal of ads based on the start and end dates so you don’t have to remember to physically add and remove the ads.

You simply create your ad zones, set your prices, and paste the AdBrite code into your pages.  AdBrite does the rest, including processing the payments.

I’m currently using AdBrite to manage some of the ads on my left and right columns of 2 Create a Website.  You can click the “Your Ad Here” links to get a feel for how the process works.

Note: Yes, it is OK to use AdBrite’s flat rate ad system in conjunction with AdSense.  I emailed Google to verify this before signing up.

2) Ad Management Scripts

Installing an ad managment script will give you the most flexibility.  Everything is managed on your own domain name and you don’t have to share any of your revenue with a third party.

There are several free scripts available that you can install to manage your ads.  OpenX (formerly OpenAds) is probably one of the most popular, open source ad scripts around.

You must have a domain name and shared or dedicated hosting plan to use these kinds of scripts. Installation and some configuration is usually required.

With many of these scripts, your advertisers can create accounts so they can manage their own ads, review click-thru reports, purchase new ads, etc.

Most are also compatible with billing solutions like PayPal, although in many instances you’ll need to install a plug-in or add-on.

3) The Manual Method

If you don’t want to bother with installing scripts or using ad management companies like AdBrite then you can manage your flat-rate ads manually.

In other words, you put the ads up and take them down yourself while managing the payments with a 3rd party billing provider like PayPal.

Yes, in case you didn’t know, PayPal has a subscription payment option.  So if someone wants to advertise on your site, you can simply login to your PayPal account, go to “Merchant Services” and select “Subscribe.”

This will allow you to setup a recurring billing/subscription payment for your advertisers.  PayPal will automatically bill them for the chosen amount every month.  Of course, you can cancel the payments at any time.

How Much Should You Charge?

“How much should I charge for my ads?” is a question that comes up a lot on my forum.

One way to determine this price is to look at your eCPM statistic from affiliate networks you belong to (CJ, LinkShare, etc.) or from programs like AdSense or AdBrite.

Let’s say your eCPM for AdSense is $3.00.  That means your site earns $3.00 for every 1,000 ad displays.   So if your site gets 5,000 visits per month then you would charge $15/month ($3.00 x 5) for the flat-rate ad.

Of course this is not the only way to determine your price and you may want to adjust it based on the kind of traffic you receive, ad placement, etc.  However, this is a good starting point for setting your prices.

A Note About Traffic

A lot of new Webmasters and Bloggers consider selling advertising space on their sites before they even have any traffic.  This is a big no-no.

Would you place an ad in a magazine that had no subscribers or circulation?  Of course not.  So build up your traffic first and then be prepared to provide statistics about your traffic to potential advertisers (traffic numbers and information about the type of visitor).

As I described above, your traffic levels can help you determine the price of your ads.  So if you have no traffic, how can you ensure your prices are appropriate?

SiteSell Sent Me $8,268.35 Last Month

Am I flashing my SiteSell affiliate check in your face to brag?

No, not at all.

When it comes to telling other people how to make money online, it’s all about credibility.

And if you can’t prove you’re actually profiting, then you sort of get lumped in with all the other “how-to-make-money” sites that leave people wondering if that Webmaster has the profits to back-up their advice.

So I thought about it and realized I could turn my success into a blog post to help inspire others.

That check meant a lot to me. Not just because it’s the largest check I’ve received from SiteSell, but because it caused me to reflect on what so many people do wrong in affiliate marketing.

So I thought I’d tell you what has worked for me…

I Use Most Products I Promote

I’ll be the first to admit, when I first started telling people to buy Site Build It!, I didn’t own it.

I was extremely wowed by the fact I could earn $75 per sale (and yearly residuals) that I immediately begin blasting banner ads and text links for SBI! all over my site.

Not a single person bought it for months.

And why would they?

I was just another cold, impersonal website asking them to shell out $299 for the possibility of making money with a website. But of course, I couldn’t really prove it worked because I didn’t own it.

As the years went on, I kept reading all the successful case studiesabout SBI!. It seemed that every month SiteSell was adding a new success story to the batch. My curiosity got the best of me.

So I bought SBI! in 2005 and created flat-stomach-exercises.com. Not only did I make my investment back in 3-4 months with Google ads, but the site rose to the top of the search engines faster than any site I’d ever created.

Of course this made for a great story on 2CreateAWebSite.com – a site that teaches people how to build websites.

Case studies and real-world examples sell like crazy. So if you are trying to get your audience to buy something, why not build a case study that outlines your experiences with the product?

Saying “The product’s great!” is one thing, but being able to show how it’s worked for you takes PREselling to a whole other level.

I Try to Be Brutally Honest

It seems when I started emphasizing that not everyone succeeds with Site Build It!, my affiliate sales went up. Sounds kinda strange at first, but if you think about it, it makes sense.

When you are reviewing a product and only talk about the benefits, people get suspicious – especially when there’s an affiliate link tied to the recommendation.

However, when I started creating videos and explaining that Site Build It! is not a get-rich-quick program, it’s a lot of work and does notpromise instant success, that increased my credibility and helped my sales.

People are so used to websites aggressively pushing products, they find it refreshing when someone doesn’t sugarcoat everything – especially when it comes to a product that supposedly helps you make money.

People Often Ask Me For My Affiliate Link

When you PREsell effectively, you’ll find some people want to make sure you get that commission. I get emails all the time from people who want to make sure they are purchasing from the right link.

Long gone are the days when I used to hide the fact I was an affiliate.

I decided that if I’m giving people my honest opinion of something and showing that I use the product, why should I hide the fact I’m getting a commission?

Sure, the affiliate link probably turns a few people off, but for the most part, people don’t mind it if they believe you are being upfront and honest.

So What’s the Point?

I didn’t write this post to tell you to join SiteSell’s affiliate program, because if I may be honest, most people are not going to generate 4-figure checks every month. (Unless your site is geared toward Webmasters.)

SiteSell’s products perform well on my site because I have the traffic and the right audience. And you can do the same with a product or service that fits with your visitors.

The point is, if you are not seeing the type of commissions and sales you’d like to receive from your affiliate programs, think about your model and approach.

• Are the products you market relevant to your audience?
• Are your recommendations filled with all fluff and no facts?
• Do you even use the products you promote?
• Do you make it easy for people to ask questions?

And if you’re spending so much time trying to hide the fact you are affiliated with the company then ask yourself “Why?”

The way I look at it is, if you really do like and use the product, what reason would you have to hide your affiliation?

Years ago I would never admit I was an affiliate because I thought it would turn people off.

And while that is still true to some extent, the majority of the people won’t care as much when they feel you are being honest and giving them valuable information.

Yes, developing case studies can be a lot of work, and that also means you’ll have to invest in some products along the way.

Starting a Blog is Easy, But

Blogging…

It seems everyone is doing it.

In fact, I asked someone the other day, “Does anyone create websites anymore?”  It seems that when given the choice between a blog and a website, most people opt for blogs these days.

If this describes you, I certainly understand your reasons.  Blogs are much easier to setup than websites.

They are dynamic, which means the scripts allow you to display content in many different ways (by date, category, tag, most commented posts, etc.)

The search engines love them, and the free plug-ins (if you use WordPress) can give you even more flexibility and increase your blog’s coolness factor.

One Problem With Blogging

Even though there are many positives with blogging, there’s one thing I’ve noticed about many who choose a blog over a website.

Blogging can often discourage beginners from learning the fundamentals of website creation and design.  Unlike a website, you don’t need to learn anything about HTML, CSS or uploading files to publish a blog.

You might argue the same could be said about websites if you use an editor.  However, even if you use an HTML editor like Dreamweaver or CoffeeCup for a website, you still have to familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of HTML at some point. (At least I had to.)

With blogs, everything can be done through a WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) control panel that comes with your blogging platform.  You don’t have to look at a lick of code if you don’t want to.

Of course, this is no big deal if you find a blog template/theme that you want to use “as is”.  But what if you want to customize large sections of your design or change it completely?

Staring at a gazillion lines of CSS code can be quite intimidating.  In fact, most people will tell you that in order to learn CSS, you should have a basic understanding of HTML first. (And I agree.)  So with no HTML background, I completely understand why some bloggers cringe at the thought of going near the code.

Many people choose blogs because they are easier to setup, but many don’t venture out and learn the fundamentals of HTML and CSS so they can freely update their designs.

I have nothing against blogging. I own one myself, obviously.  But I do believe that if you are going to blog, you should spend time learning the basics of HTML and CSS so you have the freedom to update your design beyond the standard template.

Of course, outsourcing a designer is always an option too.  However, you don’t want to become completely reliant on a third party.  I’ve heard too many nightmare stories with this scenario.

About once a month I get an email from someone who’s paid a designer to create and design their site, but they’ve lost contact with the person and have no idea how to make edits to the design.

As I say all the time, I am far from being a designer, but I have learned enough to maintain and customize my site.  You should too.

Even if you buy the premium WordPress Thesis Theme that I use for this blog, it still helps to know the basics of CSS so you can juice up the standard, out-of-the-box template.

Million Dollar Experiment – Chitika Earnings Revealed Plus a Surprise

I recently contacted Chitika to make sure it was OK for me to publicly reveal how much I’m earning from their eMiniMalls program, since I wanted to share this data as part of the Million Dollar Experiment. They told me it was OK to do so, but I couldn’t reveal more detailed stats like the click-through rate since it would violate their Terms of Service. This is good news, since it means I’m free to share this data with you.

I just started showing the Chitika ads on November 1st, and my first three days of earnings brought in $0.98, $15.72, and $32.36 in commissions. The first two days I was still setting up the ads, so the third day is probably the most accurate in terms of what to expect from ongoing daily revenue. Even though it’s too early to make accurate estimates, I’m guessing this program will generate about an extra $1000/month in revenue. That’s not as good as Adsense does for me, but so far it doesn’t seem to be cannibalizing Adsense revenue at all, so it’s a whole new income stream.
Chitika has a process where they “audit” your clicks at the end of each month to remove duplicate and fraudulent clicks, so the actual revenue you get will be a little lower than the unaudited earnings reported. I’ve heard from others that the auditing process will reduce revenue by around 10-20%, but I’ll have to wait until the end of the month to find out how this site fares. I’ll just adjust my total figures downward for the purposes of this experiment once the auditing takes place. This appears to be a reputable company as far as I can tell, so I’m not worried about eventually getting paid. Otherwise, I’d hold off on accounting for the revenue until I’d actually received it.
Furthermore, I’ve also had several people sign up for Chitika via my referral link, and some are already displaying ads on their own sites. And in other news, Google Adsense just announced its own affiliate program where they pay $100 for each new client you refer them (after the client has earned $100 in commissions), so I’ve added their referral buttons to the ever-growing sidebar on this site.
So these new sources of revenue should easily put an extra $10,000 in my pocket over the next year, probably a lot more than that as traffic continues to grow. Isn’t it amazing how technology creates pathways for earning an extra $10,000+ per year with just a few minutes work? Of course, you obviously have to lay some groundwork first. But it’s these kinds of exciting opportunities that leave me completely disinterested in ever having a regular job, as I’ll discuss further in today’s upcoming podcast.
$728 from individual ad sales
In other news I also sold some ads to an individual ad buyer today. This isn’t something I normally do at all — it’s definitely out of the ordinary for me. A couple days ago (shortly after kicking off the MDE experiment), I was contacted by an interested advertiser who wanted to purchase some text link ads. I get such emails frequently and usually just delete them because they’re typically from sites I wouldn’t feel comfortable promoting. This one initially seemed a poor fit for my content as well, but instead of trashing the email, I hesitated for a moment and then ended up sending the person a quick reply just to clarify their request (or so I rationalized to myself), so I could feel a little more certain that trashing it was the right thing to do. I’m not sure why, but my intuition just hinted that this one was different. Well, to make a long story short, we both saw the potential for a win-win deal, and we were quickly able to work out an arrangement. This whole process ended up taking just minutes worth of my time (probably about 10-20 minutes total), and a couple hours ago I received a PayPal transfer of $750.
So not only did this advertiser come to me completely unsolicited, but I also had to follow my intuition to make it happen. This was an opportunity that didn’t even exist when I began the experiment only three days ago. If I hadn’t been tuned into looking for unexpected sources of income as a result of this experiment, there’s no way this deal would have occurred. On the one hand, it’s great to take advantage of a new opportunity like this. But on the other hand, I’m starting to become an inverse paranoid, wondering if there aren’t many other sources of great value-for-value exchanges that I’ve been missing out on simply because I wasn’t tuned in to them. I’m beginning to see that simply expecting abundance to come into my life might actually be the very means of attracting it.
When you subtract the PayPal commission of $22, that puts my running total from this experiment at $777 ($750-22+49). That’s funny because 777 is considered a lucky number here in Las Vegas. It’s a winning combination on slot machines, and many hotels and businesses here have phone numbers that start with 777. For example, the Las Vegas Tourist Bureau’s phone number is 1-800-777-VEGAS. Is this some sort of sign that I’m on the right track?
Did this extra money come to me as a result of pure coincidence? I think I can readily dismiss that possibility, since I certainly had a hand in actively manifesting it. Was it caused by this experiment programming my subconscious to be more attuned to hidden financial opportunities, which helped guide me to take different actions? Maybe… for now that seems a valid possibility. Or is there some superconscious force at work that created a non-local resonance between this advertiser and myself which allowed us to quickly and smoothly work out a win-win deal in less than 48 hours?
Your guess is as good as mine. But I can think of 777 reasons to continue this experiment.
Incidentally, if you’re interested in buying individual text link ads on the site (or any other form of advertising), I find myself strangely open to this possibility now. The main blog page has a Google page rank of 7, so there are probably a lot of advertisers who’d love a text link from such a page. If you’re interested, please contact me, and we’ll see if we can work something out. Just be aware that I don’t have a formal ad program in place right now. No drug or casino ads though, please. And absolutely, positively no pop-ups.

40 Ways to Make Money on the Internet

I did a little bookmark scrub this morning and thought I would share the remaining content of my "Online Money" folder. To warn you, there are certain things that I don't like and never bookmark so:

What's NOT included: Taking Paid Surveys, Getting Paid to Surf the Internet, MLM, Contest Sites, "Buy my DVD, CD, Audiobook", etc.

What IS included: Things you can use to legitimately make money online - Everything from Getting Paid to review software to good ole' Adsense.

• Infolinks - Infolinks is probably the highest paying option for your in-text advertising. On DLM, you will see underlined links scattered throughout articles. Those are a function of Infolinks and without disclosing too much, it's been a great source of income. Best is that they accept all sizes of websites and blogs. Just sign up and begin.
• Build a Niche Store - This is a simple store development platform which enables you to create content based sites that generate income through the eBay affiliate programs. Pretty darn simple and increasingly popular.
• Adbrite - Sell space on your site for text ads. This would work like the DLM Marketplace you see on the right of my pages although I chose to manage it myself.
• Amazon Affiliate Program - Easily create a store or shopping section on your site instead of sending your visitors to Amazon. Amazon handles the shopping cart and fulfillment.
• Amazon Seller - Sell your stuff on Amazon
• Associated Content - If you write a story, how-to, rant, how-to cut grass, etc., you can submit it to them and they will pay you $3-$20 per article if they like it.
• Yahoo! Merchant Solutions - This is a pretty simple and cheap way to create an online store.
• Azoogleads - Another ad program. They do have some decent companies lined up as advertisers. You provide space, they'll provide an ad.
• BidVertiser - PPC (pay per click) program with a low $10 payout amount.
• Blog - Start a blog and consistently write excellent content. With good ad placement, you may make some money. I detail my process here: Simply Said, How to Blog.
• Cafepress - You provide a design, they'll toss it on a T-Shirt, Hat, etc. No upfront costs. Get a free online shop and promote your products on your website.
• Chitika - Their eMiniMalls service has shown great results for many Bloggers and site owners. You choose a keyword and they show relevant products on your site using a pretty unique interface.
• Clickbank - Quickly becoming my favorite affiliate program. They have thousands of things for you to advertise on your site.
• ClicknWork - Get paid $5-$150 per hour for basically doing freelance work on a per-assignment basis. You have to pass a pretty tough test to get in.
• Clicksor - These are the guys that generate contextual ads on sites that show up when you hover over a double-underlined word.
• Commission Junction - If you have a site, you can join Commission Junction. Once enrolled for free, you can choose companies whose ads are pertinent to your site. Companies have the ultimate say on working with you. There are easily over 1,000 companies to choose from here.
• CreamAid - For blogs only, advertisers provide you with a topic and you write about it on your site. To do this, you have to install a flash widget into your blog post. The more people you bring into the conversation through the widget, the more you get paid. It's difficult to explain.
• eefoof - Think of it as YouTube + Flickr + Music. You add original content and they pay you based on the visitors you attract.
• Ether - If you are an expert on something, Ether provides a way for people to pay you to talk about it in a one-on-one setting. If you want to charge $250/hr, that's fine. You have to do all the advertising so you should have a blog or site already established.
• eBay- Come on, you know what this is. Gather your junk and sell it!
• eBay Stores - If you have a real store and want to sell your stuff online, this is a decent option to get you started.
• ELance - Name gives it away. Programmers, Codes, Web Designers, Writers, Editors, can look for freelance opportunities.
• Feedvertising - This is an arm of Text Link Ads and is currently only good for Wordpress users. This does me no good currently, but as you can guess, they place ads in your feed(s).
• Feedburner / Google - Not only are they the best place to house your feeds, they will also add ads to your feed and website. You get paid per impression and if you implement Google Adsense to your feed, you are paid per click.
• Google Adsense - Come on, you don't need an explanation; these ads are all over the place. Google displays relevant ads based on your site's content
• Google Adwords - Create simple text ads and choose keywords that determine when they are displayed. This is where the Adsense Content comes from. You do not need a site for this.
• H3.com - Get paid to fill jobs. Commissions range from $50-$5,000. It all depends on how tough the job is to fill and how desperate the hiring company is. This is another one that's tough to explain.
• Indeed.com - Add their job board to your site. They then post jobs based on the geographic location of visitors and the position types you pre-select. I tried it and I they continually report that I sent 0 visitors and I know that's not right. Nevertheless, I may have an isolated problem so they make the list.
• InnerSell - If you have a customer that wants to buy something you cannot sell, you can sell the lead here.
• Jigsaw - It's a pretty flaky model but if you have a Rolodex full of good contacts, you can sell them here. I can't make sense of it but it looks like you get $0.10 per profile.
• LinkShare.com - If you have a site, you can join Linkshare. Once enrolled for free, you can choose companies whose ads are pertinent to your site. Companies have the ultimate say on working with you. Like Commission Junction, there are a ton of companies waiting to evaluate your site.
• Microsoft Adcenter - Bid on keywords and Microsoft places your created ads then they are searched for. This is similar to Google Adwords. You do not need a site for this.
• Overstock.com - Sell your stuff on Overstock.com
• Pay Per Post - I don't agree with this model entirely but they have advertisers that will pay you to write about their products on your blog.
• Pheedo - If you have an RSS feed, run it through Pheedo. Like Feedburner, they can include ads into your feed and if you really become large, advertisers will pay a premium for you to show their ads.
• Shareasale.com - I've used them for a couple years for some banner advertising. They are similar to Commission Junction and Linkshare however they seem to have lower tiered companies with advertising offers.
• Shoemoney - This is a blog that can teach you a ton on making money online. I've spent hours reading his old stuff.
• Software Judge - They will pay you up to $50 to review software.
• Text Link Ads - I have never made a dime here but I know people that have. You can earn by sending advertisers to them or by selling spots on your site. You must have a real site or blog to do this - nothing on a shared domain (i.e. /blogspot).
• Vibrant Media - Don't bother unless your site has 500,000 page views of text based content a month. If you have that readership, these are the guys that display bubble box ads to underlined words on your site.
• West Work At Home Agent - Not entirely online but this is worth a mention because it's won awards and is very legitimate. If you are an at-home Mom or free-lancer without work, you should check this out.
